Lombok sits in Bali’s shadow, which is exactly why its beaches still feel like evenings should: quiet, wide and facing due west. Our brief was simple — walk the coast path from Senggigi to the southern bays and review every sunset spot with our feet in the sand.
The method was rigorous in the way only a beach review can be: same coconut, same bench height, same willingness to stay for the green flash. Five beaches made the cut; two famous ones did not, and we name them below with love.
The five sunsets worth walking for
Top of the list is a working fishing bay where the boats come in as the sun goes down — lanterns on the water, grilled catch on the sand, and barely another traveller in sight. Second is the headland viewpoint with the old lighthouse walk, best reached on foot forty minutes before the light turns.
The other three: a black-rock cove with natural plunge pools at low tide, the long surf beach where the sky goes pink behind the palms, and the tiny harbour warung whose plastic chairs have the best front-row seats on the island. The two we skip? Overbuilt, overpriced, and facing the wrong way for the season.
Walk in, don’t ride in — the coast path links three sunsets in one golden afternoon.
How to do it the Waypost way
Walk in, don’t ride in. The coast path links three of the five spots in a single golden afternoon — 7 km, flat, with swim stops. Bring small cash for coconuts, reef-safe sunscreen, and no plan after dinner, because the second sunset — the stars — starts an hour later.
Our Bali and Lombok walking weeks end with exactly this evening. If you come, we save you the plastic chair with your name on it. Metaphorically. The chairs are plastic; the sunset is not.
